You Should Take Mathematics As an Undergraduate Course

Choosing mathematics as an undergraduate course is an option especially for those with a flair with numbers. But even if mathematics is not your cup of tea, learning it and mastering it can be achieved with practice and hard work. Here are some of the reasons why mathematics should be considered as an undergraduate course:

  • Mathematics is the universal language. And I am not just talking about our world. It is the language to be understood even by those not from our world if ever. The psyhological sequencing of formulas will be understood by anyone. It is this commonality that will enable us to talk to others should such an occurrence happen. Remember the movies contact and even Star Trek, these movies reflect the true universality of mathematics.
  • There is a career for math majors. Of course the most obvious of it is in the field of actuary. The mathematicians are those that make the probabilities for insurance companies. They are the ones that set the rates for car insurance for example. Looking for a cheap young driver’s car insurance, these actuarians look at the place or location, the number of vehicles, the number of accidents per year based on age demographics, and in getting such numbers, they make estimation. Car insurance is also based on the type of vehicle. So what vehicle has the lowest rate: the family van.
  • Mathematicians can branch out to other fields. The career of a mathematician is not limited to actuary studies but they can go to finance, research, and can even manage or head companies. If you look at those working for NASA, most of them are skilled in this science. Some have post graduate degrees in Astro-Physics or doctorates in engineering and the like.
Mathematics is a tough discipline because it forces you to follow set protocols based on logic. It is a discipline which is useful. It is a life lesson constantly being undertaken.
  • Math can make you famous. Think about it. Johannes Keppler, Thomas Newton, Galileo Galleli, Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking. All these brilliant minds were mathematicians who used this base to formulate some of the greatest ideas the world has come to embrace. Because of their ideas, their names continue to be remembered and concepts studied throughout school. Even in applied sciences like Engineering, the base of such degree is still mathematics. Mathematics will continue to be the science to which all scientist start from.
